Former Royal Insurance President & CEO J. Roy Nicholas Dies

J. Roy Nicholas, who retired in 1982 as President and Chief Executive Officer of Royal Insurance, an Arrowpoint Capital predecessor company, died February 25, 2017, in Winston-Salem, NC.  Born in 1922 near Hampton Court in the United Kingdom, he was 94 years old.

Mr. Nicholas enjoyed a long and successful career with Royal, joining the company in 1948 as a claims adjuster in New York City.  Later, he had extensive experience in the methods and planning department and office administration.  He then returned to claim and loss activities and was named a senior official in 1967.

Mr. Nicholas was appointed president in 1974 and chief executive officer the following year.  He was also the first chairman of Royal Group Inc., a US holding company formed in 1978.  In addition, he was a director of various companies of Royal Insurance PLC, located in the UK. He served on the board of numerous institutions, including Chemical Bank, the American Insurance Institute and The College of Insurance.  He retired in 1982. 

 Mr. Nicholas enlisted in the Royal Air Force in 1940, serving mostly in Africa, Malta and the Middle East, attaining the rank of Squadron Commander.  He left the Air Force in 1948 when he joined Royal.

 He is predeceased by his wife Westray, who died in 2007. He is survived by his son Stacy and his daughter-in-law Kathy.
